Amount of alcohol consumed is typically described in terms of the number of "standard drinks". A "standard drink" equals 43 mL (1.5 oz.) spirits, or 142 mL (5oz.) table wine - 12% alcohol, or 341 mL (12 oz.) regular beer, or 85 mL (3oz.) fortified wine (18% alcohol).
The degree of intoxication resulting from drinking alcohol does not depend on the type of alcoholic beverage but rather on the number of standard drinks consumed.
No matter how much alcohol is consumed or what blood level has been achieved, the liver metabolizes the alcohol at a constant rate of approximately 10 grams of ethanol per hour (slightly less than one "standard drink", which contains 13.6 grams).(1)
